In Sumatra, Indonesia, just 2,500 Sumatran elephants remain. As their last great forest habitat is being logged at a feverish pace to make way for palm oil plantations, elephants are pushed into conflict with local people. In Thailand and Myanmar, an illegal and brutal trade in wild baby elephants is contributing to declining elephant populations….????????????
Scientists battle to save Mexico’s axolotl from extinction (Reuters)?
?Mar. 2 – Mexico’s unique salamander, the axolotl, could be extinct in the wild in five to 10 years according to scientists. A revered symbol of central Mexico, the axolotl is the victim of pollution and introduced fish species and now a census is underway to see exactly how many remain in their native habitat. Scientists reveal Stone Age man’s sweet tooth (Reuters)
Feb. 12 – Scientists say they have identified the earliest signs of tooth decay in humans, from the remains of Stone Age teeth found in Morocco. The findings suggest that people living in the area between 13,500 and 15,000 years ago may have been storing and eating plants rich in carbohydrates and sugar, several thousand years earlier than previously thought.
